DOCTORAL DEGREE STUDY PROGRAMME
Physical and materials engineering

The study in this program is subjected to tuition fees charged.

The doctoral degree programme focuses on the following areas: innovations and building materials and technology development, mathematical modelling and simulations of complex multi-physical processes and experimental methods.

Features

  • The underlying educational model is based on a holistic approach – the integration and classification of knowledge, a deep understanding of the nature of various types of mathematical models and experimental methods and their mutual relationships.
  • Students acquire a broad overview of scientific theory fundamentals in the testing, development, modelling and applications of both new and traditional materials and structural members in the construction industry.
  • Students have the opportunity to gain “hands-on experience” in the use of the latest measuring instruments, methods and technologies, namely they use the equipment during instruction as well as in their own research.
  • Emphasis is put on nurturing students’ competence in obtaining information from international sources of scientific information and improving their presentation and publishing skills in English throughout their studies.

The future of construction

Now and in the near future, the construction industry will face a number of challenges, such as:

  • reducing the consumption of energy and raw materials from non-renewable sources and limiting emissions of pollutants from both the production of building materials and the construction industry, and the subsequent use of buildings,
  • repairs and maintenance of dilapidated infrastructure,
  • preservation of architectural heritage for future generations or
  • the final disposal of radioactive waste.

In response to these challenges, significant scientific progress is being made in the field of innovations and the development of building materials and technologies, mathematical modelling and simulations of complex multi-physical processes and experimental methods. The main goal of the PME programme is to train highly qualified professionals who will be able to identify the above and newly emerging challenges and develop adequate solutions using state-of-the-art expertise and methods.

The graduates of the PME programme will find employment as, e.g.:

  • teachers and researchers in the academic sector and in other institutions involved in science, research, development and innovation in the field of construction, physical and materials engineering;
  • materials specialists and technologists in manufacturing companies producing building materials and components;
  • conceptual and development experts in industrial companies and design and consulting firms engaged in construction;
  • specialists in companies developing simulation software;
  • after gaining experience, as managers in the above companies and organizations;
  • after passing professional examinations, as authorized engineers;
  • diagnostics and testing specialists in the field of building materials and structures;
  • specialists in the field of certification of construction products.
