DOCTORAL DEGREE STUDY PROGRAMME
STRUCTURAL AND TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING

The study in this program is subjected to tuition fees charged.

The doctoral degree programme focuses on the preparation of young specialists, particularly in the field of power engineering and transport infrastructure, which are the two backbone branches of the construction industry ensuring the smooth running of the Czech economy.

Features

  • The study programme is mainly oriented towards the design of load-bearing structures, construction, maintenance and, potentially, demolition processes. The courses, therefore, include information on innovations in structural design with regard to the introduction of new building materials, new advanced geometric layouts of building structures, accelerated construction processes and their automation and ensuring the durability of strategic facilities, mainly transport infrastructure and power engineering complexes.
  • The study programme will enable the extension of theoretical knowledge so that it is in line with the current state of knowledge, and, at the same time, provide students with practical experience in innovative research. The practical experience will be gained mainly in laboratories through close cooperation on current research topics. To meet this objective, selected laboratories of the Faculty of Civil Engineering CTU in Prague have been fitted with new equipment.
  • The students will be led by experienced supervisors with both long-term experience in the education of Ph.D. students as well as involvement in foreign research institutions.

MEETING FUTURE CHALLENGES

In the context of the Structural and Transportation Engineering programme, the construction industry will face a number of challenges, such as:

  • maintenance of the existing energy sources, renewal of their operating licenses, construction of new sources,
  • complex maintenance of the existing transport infrastructure and construction of a new one - extension of the motorway network and construction of new high-speed railway corridors.

These challenges will require specific abilities and skills, such as:

  • the ability to create numerical models of structures and physical and chemical processes occurring in them,
  • the designing of robotic systems for the monitoring of the condition of hard-to-reach parts of structures,
  • the skill of automation designing of production processes and repairs of building structures, which will enable the problem-solving of structures that cannot be constructed by current technologies.

The programme focuses on the above challenges, and their solutions are based on the Faculty tutors’ experience.

CAREER PROSPECTS

The graduates of the STE programme are equipped to readily find employment in various positions in the commercial sector, as well as in research and teaching. They will be successful mainly thanks to the following newly acquired knowledge and skills:

  • theoretical knowledge and developed analytical critical thinking enabling the problem-solving of complex theoretical and practical challenges;
  • a well-developed ability of imagining the real possibilities of design solutions gained through laboratory practice, which can significantly accelerate decision-making processes related to, e.g., accelerating construction, immediate repairs of strategic facilities with minimized shutdown time, verification of the immediate resistance of structures and other risky activities;
  • risk assessment through the quantification of uncertainties and consideration of the sensitivity of the solution with respect to the individual parameters of the problems at hand.
