DOCTORAL DEGREE STUDY PROGRAMME
WATER MANAGEMENT AND WATER ENGINEERING

The study in this program is subjected to tuition fees charged.

The doctoral degree programme focuses on research in the broader field of water management, water resources and water structures.

Features

  • Dissertations address research issues in a wide range of topics, including surface water and groundwater hydrology, flow in open channels, sediment and contaminant transport, flood control and revitalization of watercourses, flow in pipelines, the design, construction and operation of dams and reservoirs, structural components of hydraulic structures, runoff management in reservoirs, water transport, hydropower, complex solutions of water management and eco-friendly elements within the landscape, soil erosion, the protection of surface and groundwater from pollution, water management systems in the conditions of a changing climate, surface and groundwater treatment for drinking and utility water, water quality in drinking water supply networks and sewerage networks, the intensification of treatment processes, energy savings in water management, the hydrology of urbanized river basins and the water management systems of spa facilities, complexes and zones.
  • In solving research problems, emphasis is placed on quantitative and interdisciplinary approaches.
  • The use and development of experimental methods and the development of new tools for mathematical modelling are encouraged throughout the process of solving research issues.
  • Ph.D. students are led to independent creative work with an international dimension and are involved in the research projects conducted at their training workplaces.

RESEARCH AND INNOVATIONS IN RESPONSE TO FUTURE CHALLENGES

Our society is facing increased pressure on water resources due to climate change, land use changes, urban population growth and the need to protect the environment. Ensuring enough water supply for the population, agriculture, industry and ecosystems and adaptation to the increased variability of water occurrence over time and space are among the major challenges for the present and the near future.

These challenges can be met with the help of scientific research and innovation in the field of water management and water structures. The main goal of the programme is to prepare leading experts who, by means of deep knowledge and systematic research, will be able to push the boundaries of knowledge and apply the latest research achievements to address the above and upcoming challenges.

CAREER PROSPECTS

The graduates of the WMWE programme will find employment, e.g.:

  • as researchers and teachers in the academic sector and as scientists and researchers in research institutes and centres
  • in the business sector, particularly consulting, design and expert activities
  • they can also apply their knowledge as leading experts in water management companies; after gaining experience, also as managers in the above companies and organizations
